Thank you, Walter

Walter the Waltzing Worm. It was one of the songs that Ruby, and her pre-school class, performed tonight at their fall program. It really isn't about comparison, I know that fully. But I gotta say - Ruby nailed it! I was crying. You see, Ruby is so often occupied by the myriad of details zooming in at her at a million miles an hour: the lights, the sounds, the smells, the feeling of her scratchy tag on the inside of her shirt, the piece of lint she notices on the beige carpet, the thought of what's for lunch, the make and model of the car driving by that looks like Papa's car...Ruby pays attention to e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. It is often difficult for her to decide what to focus on foremost. Her brain is amazing. It processes SO much all at once. As her mom, sometimes this can be frustrating, inconveniencing, and unsettling. But tonight - Ruby was in the zone, Baby!
She knew every word of every song, and every motion for every dance. And when all the kids had to hold a string of green yarn in their hand and pretend it was a worm, Ruby made that thing come alive, I tell ya! Other kids were pulling on their skirts, or pointing to grandpa in the audience, or staring blankly at the teacher who was trying to get them to wave their yarn over one shoulder, then down to the floor, then creep it up along their leg...and Ruby? She owned it! She was all there!
Thank you, Walter the Waltzing Worm. God used you to whisper to this high-strung momma "Ruby's gonna be ok."
