Last week in our HLIC staff meeting, we had a guest, Susana Espinosa de Sygulla. Susana reaches out to the Latino community in south Minneapolis. She grew up in Mexico, and worked there for DuPont Corporation has an excutive in marketing. She met Christ, gave her life to Him, and was prospering in every way. She could have gone to any number of Bible colleges in Mexico, but God gave her a heart to chase dreamers. God called her to follow the people who "risk it all" to come to the U.S. to puruse the American Dream.
Susana wanted to know what it was that caused men to leave their wives, children, and physical safety behind just for the chance of something better in the U.S. She came to the Twin Cities to attend a lay training for evangelism at a big suburban church ... and she ended up staying here to reach Latinos.
Since then, God has used her to create a soccer league, Go Latino, with 64 all-male teams, and nearly 2,000 players. She also created LaVictoria youth program reaching out to 12-18 yr olds, as well as Siempre Padres for dads. In her spare time (haha) she also visits the county correctional facilities regularly to share the Gospel with inmates. Oh yeah, and she is a wife and a mother to two toddlers!
Susana came to our HLIC staff meeting to help us think through how to better serve the Latino community, and its churches. We're thankful for her, and for the many many other "heros of the faith" that God has placed in the inner city that we get to work alongside.
